When Does it Pay to Accessorize?

When you think of an accessory, you might imagine dangly earrings and bangle bracelets. In real estate we're referring to a smaller second unit within a single-family home, usually for an older family member or nanny.


This week, Arlington Town Meeting members are deciding whether the town should allow accessory apartments. Certainly there are advantages to the accessory apartment. Here are a few:
·         Provides an additional source of income
·         Eases burden on families caring for elderly parents
·         Eases burden on families in need of in-home care for children
·         Provides accommodations at relatively low cost without adding much demand on public services
The town will still need to determine conditions of owning an accessory apartment, such as having units owner-occupied, permits, lot size, etc.

Given the number of boomerang children moving back home with their parents after college and the increasing number of families caring for elderly parents, accessory apartments could alleviate much of the financial burden that comes along with each of those scenarios. Results of a survey as to whether Arlington should amend its zoning bylaw to allow accessory apartments will be presented tonight, 7:30 p.m., at the Arlington Redevelopment Board's meeting. The board meets at Town Hall Annex's conference room on the second floor.
