Where to? Top Spots for Bostonians Leaving the City

Greater Boston is vast, varied and sometimes overwhelming when it comes to deciding where to move outside the city. Curious to know where Bostonians are moving?

Work-from-home or hybrid-work opportunities have been a game changer for where people are choosing to live. Beautiful homes on the Cape and South Shore previously deemed too far to commute to Boston are now possibilities for anyone who only must commute a few days per week. The same holds true for towns west of Boston like Burlington, Fitchburg or Littleton which offer more space, land and affordability.

Looking for luxury? The usual suspects like Belmont, Lexington and Concord are always going to be sought after communities for their schools, beautiful public spaces and town amenities. But towns like Medford and Woburn are seeing an influx of $1M+ homes on the market, and they are redefining the idea of where luxury lives. For example, Woburn had 8 homes sell over $1M in 2023 as compared to 6 in 2022. Medford’s average home price over $1M was $1,448,500 in 2023 as compared to $1,218,369 in 2022.

The Green Line Extension has opened up access to parts of Cambridge, Somerville and Medford making certain neighborhoods hot-spots for those wanting to keep their urban lifestyle but with more housing styles and options.

Thinking outside the Massachusetts box? Areas like New Hampshire are popular for lower taxes and Florida is a destination for warm weather seekers. Portland, Maine is also a hot spot for its food scene and access to nature.
