Now there's a topic we didn't think we would be covering in New England! Now and then an earthquake or its aftershocks can be felt in the Greater Boston area reminding us that we are not exempt from these natural occurrences, so we should be prepared!

Earthquake preparedness is essential for everyone to be ready in case of emergency. Readiness involves preparing for and mitigating the potential risks and impacts of an earthquake. Here are some ways to make sure you and your loved ones are prepared:
Emergency Supplies
Prepare an emergency kit including essential items like water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, battery-operated flashlights, batteries, and important documents. Add any medical supplies based on your family's needs.
Create a Plan & Emergency Contacts
Alongside your family, develop a plan that includes communication strategies and a meeting point in case of an emergency. You can practice earthquake or general emergency drills with your family to ensure everyone knows what to do during an earthquake. Make sure children know the phone numbers of important people and first responders. You can even create a document with a list of emergency contacts including family, friends, local emergency services, and other important people in your life. Ensure everyone in your household has access to this document.
Prepare Your Space
You can anchor heavy items or bolt them into the walls to prevent them from falling. Install latches on cabinets so they don't open. Find places for your family to safely protect themselves from falling objects and windows. Know the safety features in the spaces you frequent (home, school, office, etc.).
First Aid Training
Know how to take care of yourself and those around you during an emergency. Basic first aid and CPR skills are crucial knowledge that may come in handy during a natural disaster. Stay in touch with members of your community to stay in the know. Know the location of nearby emergency shelters and evacuation centers.
