Organizing 101

Now that winter is here to stay and we’re all stuck inside without much to do, what better time to reorganize your home! This can be a pretty daunting task to undertake, so we’re here to help make it a little less scary with 5 tips, start to finish.

Declutter

Go through your space and find all the things you no longer need or use. You can set up a few different bins to separate these items into donations, trash, or storage. Keeping the decluttering process as neat as possible will also allow you to make sure you don’t misplace anything you don’t want to get rid of. Go through your closets, bathroom cabinets, and don’t forget about those junk drawers! Once you go through your entire house, find out when you can drop off your donations at your local places. For larger items that you want to get rid of, you may have to call and have junk haulers take them away. And don’t be afraid to ask for help, whether it’s emotional support from your cat or having your children go through their bedrooms.

Start Small

Don’t pressure yourself to turn your house into The Container Store in just one day, organizing takes a long time and requires patience. Start with just working in a room, or even just a closet, for a few days or a week. Organizing your kitchen utensils drawer is a project within itself, so start small and with what’s most important to you.

Do Your Research

There are a lot of resources available all over the internet for organizing. Even a show on Netflix, Get Organized with The Home Edit where they declutter their clients' homes, just to give you some inspiration. Look on YouTube, and follow along with someone else’s home makeover. You can also find recommendations for organizing tools like specific containers or baskets you might find useful.

Write it Down

Grab some paper and create a schedule of what you want to accomplish and make lists. The schedule can help keep you on track and give you the satisfaction of crossing something off. Additionally, you can make lists; whether that's taking inventory of your closet, your donations, or how much space you have in your closet for a shoe rack. Writing things down is scientifically proven to help you remember them better and it will help you refer back to all the hard work you are accomplishing.

Create a System

To best organize your space for your life, consider your habits and your routines. What do you use most frequently? What no longer serves you? This will help you make your home more accessible for you and your family’s needs which will allow you to be a more efficient, happier person. Instead of training yourself to place items in different areas than previously, try to make the area better suit your needs. Make homes for the items that make the most sense to you. You can zone your home to keep things where necessary; put things infrequently used in a storage area (whether this is a closet, basement, attic, or just a drawer), put your most used items during the workday in close proximity to your office space.
