As we grow older, and our parents do too, you might have to start looking into assisted living or home care options for your loved ones. We know this can be a really scary, daunting, and emotional process for all parties involved. To help ease that burden, we have a few tips to help make that transition a little smoother.
Make a Plan
Sometimes individuals who need help, don’t want to ask for it or don’t quite know how. A lot of people struggle to accept that they need it and don’t want to give up their autonomy, in order to avoid a situation in which you have to convince, or worse force, someone into assisted care you should make a plan well ahead of time if possible. Talk with your loved ones, what are their wishes and asks of you as they grow older. Try to figure out some details so when it gets to that point there is no arguing or convincing, you simply follow the plan. The same goes for yourself, you can take the time to figure out what you want. Just talking about this is a great start.
Research
While making your plan, look into potential home-help or assisted-living options and their price ranges. See what works for your family, some may be covered by insurance or Medicaid so it might not be quite as expensive. Think about what factors are most important to you like the number of staff working, how often someone will be there to help, what kind of protocols they have in place for emergencies, Covid-19 procedures — all of that. While this might be nerve-wracking and uncomfortable, you are better off in the end by preparing for it now.
Downsizing, or as we like to call it Rightsizing
Another option you have to consider is moving. Maybe you have outgrown your home, you struggle going up the stairs, you can’t step into the bathtub anymore, the sink height worsens your posture — something is impeding you from living to your full potential in that space, that mine mean it’s time to go. And that’s okay! We can outgrow spaces, literally, or it’s just plain ole time. Finding a space that suits your needs can greatly improve your quality of life and ability to live self-sufficiently.
