How Arlington Celebrated Black History Month & How To Keep Uplifting Black Voices

Throughout the month of February, Arlington has celebrated Black History Month in a myriad of ways. Uplifting Black businesses, art, historical figures, community voices and more have been taking place all over Arlington.

You might have noticed colorful banners hung along Mass Ave. featuring prominent historical figures including author and civil rights activist William Monroe Trotter, African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist Eliza Ann Gardner, abolitionist and leader in the free black community in Boston Price Hall, and more. The banners were created by young local Black artists

The Capitol Theatre held a free screening of the Oscar winning film, The Color Purple, an adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel.

The city of Medford in partnership with Tufts African American Foundations and Roots Organization held an event at Medford City Hall themed “African Americans and Labor” highlighting the creations and contributions of African Americans throughout United States History.

These are just a few of the events, projects, and activities that filled the month of February, but it doesn't stop here. To continue to learn more about Black history locally and within the US as a whole, here are a few ways to stay involved and continue to uplift Black voice.
